Our identity

The Meaning Behind Our Logo

The Legacy Lens — a camera lens becoming a human eye — is our promise on a mark: to look at the past clearly, honour the people inside it, and open a fuller view of history for the next generation.

Our Past. Our Power. Our Future.

The story

Why the Legacy Lens

Black history has too often been narrowed, softened, or edited out of the classroom. Our work is a corrective — a broader, source-led view of civilisations, ideas and lives that shaped Britain and the world.

The Legacy Lens turns that mission into a mark. A camera lens says look closely. A human eye says look with care. Together, they insist history is people first, evidence second, and always seen — never assumed.

Symbolism

Inside the mark

  • The lens / iris: observation and evidence — the discipline of the historian.
  • Silhouetted figures around the rim: the people whose stories are being restored to the frame — ancestors, scholars, families, children.
  • Radiating aperture blades: the many perspectives that make one honest picture.
  • Gold ring: heritage, dignity, and the wealth of African civilisations from Kush to Mali.
  • Centred pupil: focus — clarity of sight for the learner.

Colour

Heritage palette

Every colour is chosen from a shared visual language of the African diaspora: earth, gold, sacrifice, growth. Used with restraint, they read as scholarly first and celebratory second.

Charcoal

Near-black

Authority, ink on the page.

Heritage Gold

#D4AF37

Dignity, legacy, focal accent.

Heritage Red

Deep red

Courage, remembrance, sacrifice.

Heritage Green

Deep green

Growth, renewal, the future.

Warm cream is our page — chosen over stark white to feel like paper, archive, and permanence.

Our promise

Past. Power. Future.

A logo is a promise made in miniature. Ours is simple: look with care, teach from the source, and leave the frame wider than we found it.
